Summer Side-Quests in switzerland with your girls

  1. Go to a random town like Neuchatel and leave your phone in your bag. Ask locals for directions and recommendations instead of searching. Navigate by instinct and conversation.

  2. Hike to the mountains and stay overnight to catch the sunrise from the top. Or get the first cable car before 8am. You'll have the whole ridge to yourselves. Bring coffee in a thermos.

  3. Lake picnic with a charades rule: use only German words, even if it’s A1 level.

  4. Walk or bike along the waterfront in the morning before the city fills up. Stop for coffee at least twice.

  5. Float the Aare river from Thun to Bern. Get in at the public swimming area at Marzili, let the current carry you downstream, dry off on the grass with snacks.

  6. Book a night in a hay barn. Swiss farms offer this as actual accommodation: you sleep in the loft, breakfast comes from the farm. Surprisingly good.

  7. Take the regional yellow postbus to the end of its route. Wherever it goes. Get off, figure it out.

  8. Do the Lavaux wine trail on foot. UNESCO vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva with walking paths between villages. Stop at any open cellar. Swiss wine barely leaves the country, this is the only place to drink it properly.

  9. Find a farm stand and cook entirely from what's available that day. No substitutions, no grocery store top-ups.

  10. Swim out to a floating platform on the lake and don't leave until you've collectively solved one crossword puzzle.

  11. Take a lake ferry to a town none of you have been to and eat whatever the local restaurant is serving as their daily special.

  12. Go berry or cherry picking at a pick-your-own farm. Eat more than you take home. That's the deal.

  13. Swim under a mountain waterfall that has a pool at the base. Cold enough that you have to stop talking for a second.

  14. Do wine hiking (one of the closest to Zurich is in Weinfelden). A marked route through the vineyards with tastings along the way. Slower than a night out, better conversations.

  15. Catch the sunrise from Uetliberg. Take the first train up from Zurich HB, it runs early. You'll be back in the city for brunch.

  16. End of summer memory night. Everyone brings one photo from the summer printed out. Talk about what actually happened this summer, what surprised you, what you want to carry into autumn. End it with a plan for one more thing before the season closes.
